Petition to Restore Bailie Beach and Protect the Inlet

In 2014 the Army Corps of Engineers completed a dredging and beach renourishment project designed to repair the damage to Bailie Beach caused by the jetties defining Mattituck Inlet, preserve the Breakwater jetty’s ability to keep sand out of the channel, and most important, protect the Inlet itself against breach. This year the Army Corps is planning to do a very limited maintenance dredge inside the channel only; while needed, it does not address the profound damage to Bailie Beach and the shoreline to its east.

The 2009 study that supported the work completed in 2014 cautioned that the beach restoration work would need to be repeated every nine years, or the new sand would be eroded away and the problem renewed. It’s now 11 years later, and the Army Corps currently has no plans to address the issue. The risk of a catastrophic breach is real and made worse by every nor’easter.

The Mattituck Park District, working with community residents, has reached out to Congressman LaLota’s office to enlist his help in both persuading the Army Corps to do the work needed and in finding the funding for that work. Please support our efforts by signing the petition by clicking here. We will keep you updated of future events and ways to participate.

Please Note: Change.org makes a donation request for petitions such as these, and we have no ability to stop it. The Mattituck Park District will not receive any such donation nor do we have any say as to what change.org does with the funds. We value the site’s ability to enable us to get signatures easily and electronically, which is why we posted the petition there.

Nearly a century ago, the residents of the hamlets of Mattituck and Laurel (within Southold Town) were concerned about potential riparian development and the loss of access to the beaches and shore. In 1924 they petitioned the State for the formation of a park district within the Town of Southold to acquire lands for park purposes. Later, in 1941 the Mattituck Park District was created by an act of the New York State Legislature, by repealing the prior act and formally creating the MPD as a special municipality.
